The 612: Storytelling at The Moth

Logo_The612_HudallaEveryone loves a good story and the Moth is in the storytelling business. A non-profit, The Moth specializes in the art of mixing spoken word with well-crafted storytelling. Amsterdam Bar and Hall hosts The Moth March 22, a night of live storytelling when each anecdote is completely true and centers around the chosen theme: Wonder.

Storytellers can interpret this theme any way they wish – from telling a tale about their first kiss to finding a toy at the bottom of a cereal box – but every story has to be five minutes in length and without notes. The best part? Anyone with a wonder-filled story can share.

“Storytellers put their name in a hat and are picked at the beginning of the show, so there’s no real way to know who is going to be telling a story,” said Brenda Peters, entertainment manager at Amsterdam. At the end of the night, one storyteller will be crowned Story Slam Champion.

The Moth straddles the line between theatrics and human authenticity, giving storytellers space to tell their tales in a powerful way.

“People really enjoy the Moth,” Peters said. “Many of our customers return month after month to see it.”
