Student Senate met Mon., April 11. Here is what you need to know.

By Molly Wilson

Big Kid Bash

Residence Life has requested $3000 to fund the annual upperclassman event Big Kid Bash. This year it will feature events like axe throwing, rock climbing, an inflatable slide, ultimate ninja warrior course and smashing the car. The event will take place May 14 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the parking lot areas around the Lakeside Center. Bill 63-9 proposes that $1000 each be allocated from the Sophomore, Junior and Senior class funds because these are the groups funding the event. The bill will be voted on in the next meeting.

Amending the Student Senate Constitution

Senate already has had the power to reject any Executive Director Presidential Nominees and therefore the implied power to approve any nominees. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the voting process was dropped because of “disorder.” Resolution 63-8 reinforces the implied power Student Senate has had to reject any appointees with a two-thirds majority vote. This resolution adds the initiative that Senate will vote to approve them. “This is one more way the Executive Board and Senate can work together,” President Pro Tempore Laura Charlotte Underwood said, after reiterating that this resolution does not reflect a distrust of the current executive board or the current executive director nominees.

Resolution 63-8 was passed unanimously. Voting for the executive nominees took place at the same meeting. Executive Director of Student Ministries, Financial Officer, Executive Director 0f Student Activities, Executive Director of Clubs and Organizations and Executive Director of Communications and Marketing nominees were all approved.

The Executive Director of United Cultures of Bethel was not voted on because a nominee has not yet been presented. Two weeks ago Student Senate voted Laura Charlotte Underwood as the Executive Chair of Student Senate.

Elections

Applications to be a part of the Student Senate for the 2022-2023 school year are due May 1 at 10 p.m. Anyone interested will meet with Carolyn Ziebol and Laura Charlotte Underwood May 2 to discuss campaigning. Elections will be held May 5. The application can be found here
