September 1: Women’s soccer starts season with victory over Northwestern

The Bethel Women’s soccer team started out the regular season on a high note, completing an impressive 4-1 win over Northwestern on Thursday. Junior defender Kelsey Bergan got the Royals on the board early with a goal in the third minute, striking a shot from the top of the box line, off the crossbar and in. From there on out, the Royals never looked back, providing an onslaught of goals in succession, scoring two more times in the first half and once more immediately after halftime. Freshman forward Malia Beilby, junior midfielder Bella Heckmann, and senior defender Ally Gramstad would all find themselves in the goal column, scoring at 26 minutes, 29 minutes, and 46 minutes, respectively. Junior goalkeeper Izzy Smith played a huge role in the Royals’ success as she saved eight of the nine shots on goal she faced.Northwestern would go on to add a goal at 61 minutes in the second half, but it was too little too late as the Royals cruised to a 4-1 victory, starting out the season with a bang.
