Bursting the Bubble

For when you don’t want to play shuffleboard in the Underground or watch “Shrek” for the fifth time in shack, here is your guide to off-campus events.

Something free: Calling all politics nerds – the University of Minnesota is hosting An Evening with Liz Cheney at the Northrop Memorial Auditorium Oct. 4 at 6 p.m.. The event is free but registration is required

Something that’s always available: Valleyfair is headed into spooky season. The amusement park has its classic rides like the Wild Thing open, and on the weekends you can dress up to enter the land of tricks or the land of treats. Make sure to get tickets if you want to ride one last roller coaster before the cold, dead winter sets in. Pro tip: find a friend who doesn’t like the rides and will watch your bags for you.

Something new: Everyone loves walking through a thrift store trying to figure out what is old and worth it and what is just old… right? Head to the Grand Opening at Nine Lives at the Center for Lost Objects, Gallery & Showroom Saturday at 4 p.m. to shop their fresh thrifting selection.

Something that’s always available: Across the river from Lowertown St. Paul sits the Wabasha Street Caves, an event hall carved into sandstone caves. Guided tours of the caves are provided every day except for Tuesdays. For just $11, you’ll learn about the casinos and gangsters of ole and can even kill some time swing dancing to live music after.

Something new: Staying on campus during fall break? Head to the Tweed Ride and Lawn Party at the James J. Hill House. Dress up in your favorite old-timey clothes for some live music and bike racing. The lawn party starts at 3 p.m.
