In a disappointing performance during the EuroBasket 2025 semifinals, Giannis Antetokounmpo was effectively contained by Turkey, drawing attention to the tactical prowess of Alperen Sengun and coach Ergin Ataman. The Greek Freak, widely regarded as one of the best players in the world, faced difficulties throughout the match, scoring only 12 points.

Struggling on the Court

The Turkish defense implemented a straightforward but effective strategy: create a barrier against Antetokounmpo, compel him to pass, and challenge his teammates to step up. “We placed Ercan (Osmani) on Giannis and helped as much as we could,” said Sengun post-game, as reported by BasketNews. “Ercan did a great job. Of course, Giannis is one of the best players in the world, he’s incredible, but he’s not a great passer. So, we focused on closing down the paint.”

Strategic Defensive Approach

Sengun’s comments underline Turkey’s tactical approach, which has proven effective in various competitions. Antetokounmpo, who averaged 6.5 assists in the NBA last season and even reached 8 assists during his last 20 regular-season games, was expected to facilitate plays. However, the European style of basketball, with its reduced space and defensive three-second rules, complicates those opportunities.

The Turkish team persistently trapped Antetokounmpo whenever he entered the paint. This not only stifled his scoring ability but also made it challenging for him to create solid chances for his teammates who were, admittedly, not at their shooting best.

“We wanted to play aggressively on defense. Against Giannis, we did not back down. Osmani tried to keep him from receiving the ball, and when he got past him, we trapped him inside with Sengun. He never found his comfort zone. This isn’t the NBA; it’s European basketball. If you close down the paint aggressively, it works. It’s not that difficult to stop,” said Ergin Ataman, the Turkish coach, through EuroHoops.

The anti-Giannis tactics used by Turkey are not new; similar strategies were employed in previous NBA playoffs to limit his impact before he adapted and led his team to victory. As the championship progresses, the question remains: can Antetokounmpo overcome these challenges on the international stage?
