After a dynamic second season, the anime adaptation of the manhwa Solo Leveling has yet to confirm the long-awaited arrival of its third season. Given the anime’s success and the cliffhanger from its last episode, fans are eagerly anticipating an announcement. However, there seems to be no update from the creators. Meanwhile, Chugong, the author of Solo Leveling, has hinted at the possibility of crafting a true continuation of his work.

Is a “True Sequel” to Solo Leveling on the Horizon?

While viewers are engrossed in the intense battles of the Solo Leveling anime adaptation, readers of the completed novel and manhwa, which concluded in 2018 and 2021 respectively, can delve deeper into this captivating universe with Solo Leveling: Ragnarok. This sequel, written by Daul since 2023, focuses on the son of the main character from Solo Leveling and ambitiously expands Chugong’s universe.

However, despite the epic journey enjoyed by readers of Solo Leveling: Ragnarok, Chugong has recently downplayed Daul’s work, labeling it merely as a “fanservice spin-off“. Kakao announced the web novel Solo Leveling: Ragnarok in April 2023, during which Chugong expressed his decision to support Daul and noted that he felt the same emotions he experienced when first releasing the original story.

Chugong’s Perspective on Solo Leveling: Ragnarok

In a recent interview with LitRes, a Russian digital and audio book service, Chugong stated that Ragnarok was an experiment to explore another author’s interpretation of the world he created. “Ragnarok was a spin-off created to satisfy fans,” Chugong explained. “I was curious to see how another author could write Solo Leveling.”

Solo Leveling

Chugong’s frank assessment of the “sequel” to Solo Leveling suggests he may be planning a “true” continuation. With the anime’s popularity and the desire from Kakao, A-1 Pictures, and Crunchyroll to see the project continue, there are concerns that Solo Leveling: Ragnarok could also be adapted into an anime. Eager to maintain control over the universe he created, Chugong seems determined to bring the spotlight back to his original vision.
