Glen “Big Baby” Davis, the former NBA star, has officially been released from prison after serving 17 months for his involvement in a significant health insurance fraud scheme. His sentence, originally set for 40 months, stemmed from fraudulent activities concerning the NBA Players’ Health and Benefit Welfare Plan. Following his release, Davis expressed his optimism about the future in a celebratory message shared online.
The NBA Health Care Fraud Scheme
The fraud case came to light in October 2021, when federal prosecutors accused a group of former NBA players of submitting false medical reimbursement claims to the league’s health insurance program. Prosecutors allege that between 2017 and 2019, the group filed approximately $5 million in fraudulent medical and dental claims, resulting in around $2.5 million in payouts.
In total, 18 former NBA players were implicated alongside various accomplices. Investigators revealed that the players submitted falsified invoices for services that were never rendered, including costly dental work and chiropractic treatments. The alleged leader of the operation was former New Jersey Nets guard Terrence Williams, who was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison in 2023. Other notable sentences included:
- Keyon Dooling: 27 months
- Alan Anderson: 24 months
- Glen Davis: 40 months
Davis received the second-longest prison term among those involved in the scheme, and he was also ordered to pay $80,000 in restitution. In addition, he must attend financial management classes and participate in drug treatment programs.
Early Release and Halfway House
Despite being sentenced to more than three years in prison, Davis was released after approximately 17 months of incarceration. After his release, he will transition to a halfway house in Long Beach, California, where he will continue to fulfill the conditions of his sentence. Federal records indicate that Davis will remain under supervision until July 2026, followed by a three-year period of supervised release.
Davis’s attorney noted that during his time in prison, the former NBA player took part in various rehabilitation and educational programs. “He used his time productively while serving his sentence and took many programs during that time,” said Brendan White, Davis’s attorney. “He’s ready to become a productive member of society again.”
Glen Davis’ NBA Career
Glen Davis gained national attention as a standout player at LSU, helping the Tigers reach the Final Four in 2006. He entered the NBA during the 2007 draft, where the Seattle SuperSonics selected him in the second round before trading him to the Boston Celtics. Davis quickly became a fan favorite known for his size, charisma, and aggressive playing style. He played a pivotal role off the bench for the Celtics team that clinched the 2008 NBA Championship.
Davis spent four seasons in Boston before being traded to the Orlando Magic, where he played for three more seasons. He concluded his NBA career with the Los Angeles Clippers, making his final appearances during the 2014-2015 season. Over his nine-year career, Davis earned approximately $34.3 million in salary.
Life After the NBA
After retiring from professional basketball, Davis attempted to carve out a new career in television and film, appearing in shows like “Shameless” and “Power Book IV: Force.” He also joined the BIG3 basketball league, where he won a championship in 2018. However, despite these successes, Davis found himself embroiled in a federal fraud investigation that culminated in his prison sentence.
Now, as a newly released individual, Davis expresses his eagerness to embark on the next chapter of his life.
