France’s Journey to the 2027 World Cup Begins with New Opponents
The French national basketball team has learned its rivals as it sets its sights on qualification for the 2027 World Cup in Qatar. Although the tournament is still a few years away, this draw marks a significant step in their journey.
Major Draw Results Announced
On Tuesday, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) conducted the draw for the qualification groups for the 2027 World Cup in Doha, Qatar. The French men’s team has been placed in Group G alongside Finland, Belgium, and an as-yet undecided team that will emerge from the pre-qualification round, likely to be one of North Macedonia, Hungary, or Romania. This setup promises a rematch with Belgium shortly after their encounter at EuroBasket.

Competitive Landscape Ahead
In Europe, 32 nations will compete for 12 spots at the World Cup. This includes the 24 teams already qualified for EuroBasket 2025, along with eight others who will come from a qualification tournament in August. The initial round of the qualifications will occur in November 2025, February, and July 2026, with eight groups of four teams. The top three from each group will qualify for the next round.
The second phase of qualifications will build on the results from the first round and will take place in August and November 2026 and February 2027. More updates will be anticipated as the timeline progresses.
“This draw is particularly interesting as we are in the midst of preparations for EuroBasket this summer. It’s hard to project strengths at this stage, but I followed the draw closely because these qualifications represent the beginning of a nearly three-year journey leading up to the Los Angeles Olympics. I consider this the second step towards the Games, with EuroBasket being the first.” – Frédéric Fauthoux
As the EuroBasket wraps up, France will shift focus to the global stage with the World Cup, followed by the Olympics the following year. In the meantime, it’s also crunch time for the NBA Playoffs, the Draft, the WNBA, Free Agency, the Summer League, and even the petanque competition on August 15. Stay tuned.
