In a landmark collaboration between Leonardo DiCaprio and director Paul Thomas Anderson, the film One Battle After Another premiered on September 24, 2025, in theaters across France and the United States. The critical reception has been positive, with the film achieving a successful opening weekend that breaks records.

One Battle After Another: DiCaprio’s Oscar Bid

Could this be Leonardo DiCaprio’s ticket to a second Oscar? The 50-year-old actor plays Bob Ferguson, a former revolutionary forced to take up arms once more to save his daughter when his arch-nemesis resurfaces in One Battle After Another. Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, known for acclaimed films such as Boogie Nights and There Will Be Blood, this latest project draws significant inspiration from a novel by American author Thomas Pynchon, whom Anderson previously adapted in Inherent Vice starring Joaquin Phoenix.

Box Office Performance and Critical Acclaim

Produced by Warner Bros. Discovery with a considerable budget estimated at $140 million, One Battle After Another represents a significant gamble for the production company following recent disappointments with films like George Miller’s Furiosa and Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17. However, the risk appears to be paying off, as the film grossed $22.4 million in its opening weekend in the U.S., slightly surpassing the initial projections of $21 million, and earning $48.5 million internationally, according to Deadline. Currently, it marks the best opening for any of Paul Thomas Anderson’s films.

DiCaprio can also celebrate his success, as One Battle After Another is his 11th film to surpass $20 million in its opening weekend. The actor’s presence seems to bolster box office performance. Nonetheless, it’s important to note that while the initial figures are promising, the film has a long road ahead. With production costs between $130 and $140 million, primarily due to expensive action scenes, it will need to gross at least $200 million to cover its expenses, including marketing and distribution, as reported by Deadline.
