The NBA season kicks off on October 21, marking the return of team previews in the lead-up to the start. This year, as always, we’re analyzing all 30 franchises, covering offseason movements, rosters, projections, and predictions. Today, our focus is on the Houston Rockets.
Last Season’s Performance
- 2024-25 Record Summary for the Houston Rockets
The Rockets experienced a significant improvement in their performance during coach Ime Udoka’s second season, increasing their win total from 41 in 2024 to 52 in 2025. This success earned them a commendable second place in the Western Conference, marking their return to the playoffs for the first time since 2020, the last year of the James Harden era.
Houston’s resurgence can be attributed to a top-five NBA defense that ensured competitiveness every night. This formidable defense also facilitated effective transition plays, largely driven by Amen Thompson, who enjoyed a stellar sophomore campaign and earned a spot on the NBA All-Defensive First Team. Known for his exceptional skills, Thompson even managed a standout moment when he dunked on Tyler Herro during a late December confrontation.
With players like Thompson, Dillon Brooks, and Tari Eason, the Rockets emerged as one of the most physically imposing teams in the league, leading to various on-court altercations throughout the season. However, reducing their identity solely to physicality would be an oversimplification. Collectively, they displayed remarkable strength, notably with Alperen Sengun earning his first All-Star selection. The Turkish center shone with his versatility, demonstrating that Houston possesses serious basketball talent.
In the playoffs, the Rockets faced the Golden State Warriors with tenacity, showcasing a fierce competition. A key aspect of the series was the impactful presence of Steven Adams, who partnered with Sengun in a double-big lineup that proved challenging for the Warriors. Ultimately, however, Houston’s lack of playoff experience and offensive limitations were evident in half-court situations, exemplified by Jalen Green’s struggles in his first postseason. A Game 7 home loss was disappointing, yet there are valid reasons for optimism moving forward.
Summer Market Activities
- Departures: Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, Cam Whitmore, Jock Landale, David Roddy, Nate Williams, Jack McVeigh, N’Faly Dante.
- Extensions: Fred VanVleet, Jabari Smith Jr., Steven Adams, Jae’Sean Tate, Aaron Holiday, Jeff Green.
- Additions: Kevin Durant, Dorian Finney-Smith, Clint Capela, Josh Okogie, Kevon Harris (two-way), Isaiah Crawford (two-way), JD Davison (two-way).
Kevin Durant’s next chapter will unfold in Houston. After extensive rumors surrounding a potential trade for the superstar, the Rockets successfully negotiated a deal with the Suns (along with five other franchises) to acquire one of the greatest scorers in NBA history. In the process, Houston also added former Rocket Clint Capela but had to give up Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, and the 10th pick in the 2025 Draft. Fans are now anticipating the impending contract extension for Durant, who is entering the final year of his deal.
Another crucial addition, Dorian Finney-Smith, is expected to enhance Houston’s prospects this season. Known for his defensive versatility and ability to make key three-point shots, Finney-Smith joined the team on a four-year, $53 million contract, perfectly aligning with Udoka’s coaching philosophy.
In terms of contract extensions, the Rockets invested significantly in retaining their core players: $50 million over two years for Fred VanVleet, $122 million over five years for Jabari Smith Jr., and $39 million over three years for Steven Adams. As a result, Houston’s payroll has increased sharply, bringing them close to the first salary apron, leading to Cam Whitmore’s trade to Washington for draft capital.
2025-26 Rockets Roster
- Guards: Fred VanVleet, Reed Sheppard, Aaron Holiday, JD Davison (two-way)
- Wings: Amen Thompson, Josh Okogie, Kevon Harris (two-way)
- Forwards: Kevin Durant, Tari Eason, Jae’Sean Tate, Isaiah Crawford (two-way)
- Centers: Jabari Smith Jr., Dorian Finney-Smith, Jeff Green

Starters are indicated in bold, according to reputable sources.
The Rockets boast a tall, defensively capable, and physically imposing roster, offering a wealth of options for coach Ime Udoka. He indicated that the starting five at the season’s outset would include Kevin Durant, Alperen Sengun, Amen Thompson, Jabari Smith Jr., and an undecided fifth player. Fred VanVleet’s knee injury has created uncertainty at the point guard position, necessitating an internal solution due to limited financial flexibility for free agent acquisitions.
The available options for the point guard position are less than ideal: sophomore Reed Sheppard is talented yet inexperienced, while Aaron Holiday is not seen as a starting-caliber player in the NBA. Therefore, Thompson may need to assume greater responsibilities at the point, with Tari Eason expected to step up in a wing role as well. Finney-Smith, as an experienced 3&D player, could be an alternative, although he will begin the season on the injured list.
Expect varied combinations from Udoka throughout the season, ranging from a double-big lineup featuring Sengun and Adams to more unconventional “tall ball” strategies. Houston’s philosophy is firmly defense-oriented and focused on toughness while hoping that Durant’s offensive firepower, combined with Sengun and Thompson’s upward trajectories, will address their half-court limitations as they aim for the stars.
Players to Watch This Season
Key players to follow include Kevin Durant, Alperen Sengun, and Amen Thompson.
Despite injury issues, Durant remains a top pick, capable of averaging 27 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists with shooting splits of 50-40-90. Sengun, recognized as one of the most versatile centers in the league with an average of 19 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists per game, has showcased his potential during EuroBasket, further solidifying his readiness for greater responsibilities in the NBA. With VanVleet sidelined, Sengun could also see an increase in his playmaking duties, possibly taking on a “point center” role.
Additionally, Thompson, who showcased his triple-double potential last season, is expected to expand his role this year.
Expectations for the Season
Many see the Houston Rockets as serious contenders, particularly in a competitive Western Conference. While some may consider them the top threat to the Oklahoma City Thunder, it’s undeniable that the Rockets are equipped to be strong playoff contenders.
Houston is poised to maintain one of the best defenses in the NBA while excelling in rebounding battles. Opponents will think twice before facing the Rockets with their physicality and resilience. The addition of Durant could elevate their offensive game, provided he remains healthy, paired with the rising stars like Sengun and Thompson, creating an intimidating lineup.
Although VanVleet’s long-term injury is a significant setback, the Rockets possess the depth necessary to minimize its impact. Houston’s roster, particularly in the frontcourt, is a strong point, blending youthful talent with experienced players who can guide their way through challenges. This balance is particularly enticing under Udoka’s leadership and collective culture.
Expect a strong showing this season, with a likelihood of finishing among the top teams in the West, aiming for playoff success.
