The Michigan Wolverines have entered a new chapter following their perfect 15-0 season and national championship win in 2023. Amidst significant coaching upheaval, they hope to stabilize their program with the hiring of Kyle Whittingham, the former head coach of Utah, after parting ways with second-year coach Sherrone Moore due to serious allegations.
Coaching Changes Amid Controversy
Since clinching the national title, Michigan has faced considerable instability in its coaching staff. Jim Harbaugh, the team’s former head coach, left to take the helm at the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers. The Wolverines struggled during the 2024 season under offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell, finishing with an 8-5 record and a disappointing 5-4 in the Big Ten, leading to Campbell’s dismissal.
The situation escalated further when head coach Sherrone Moore was fired after credible evidence surfaced regarding an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. Moreover, Moore now faces potential felony charges for third-degree home invasion along with two misdemeanor charges related to stalking and breaking and entering.
A Fresh Start with New Leadership
In a bid to turn the page, Michigan has welcomed Kyle Whittingham as its new head coach. The seasoned coach recently departed from his role at Utah, where he had been since 2004. Whittingham quipped that rather than retiring, he was entering the “transfer portal,” a humorous nod to the player movement seen in college football.
Whittingham’s agreement with Michigan is a five-year contract averaging $8.2 million per season, with 75% of the salary guaranteed, including a projected $8 million in the 2026 season. This marks a significant increase from his previous contract at Utah, which paid him approximately $5 million annually.
Throughout his impressive career, the 66-year-old Whittingham achieved a remarkable record of 177-88 at Utah, boasting a winning percentage of 66.8%. His tenure included a perfect 13-0 season in 2008 and multiple Rose Bowl appearances in 2021 and 2022. Although Utah ended the 2024 season with a strong 10-2 record, Whittingham’s focus has now shifted to establishing a robust program at Michigan.
He’ll begin his new role ahead of Michigan’s matchup against Texas in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Eve, as both teams aim for double-digit victories this season. Whittingham’s leadership is seen as pivotal for the Wolverines as they look to build a successful future.
