Since Disney finalized its acquisition of 21st Century Fox and its assets in 2019, fans of the X-Men have been eagerly anticipating the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s plans for these iconic mutants. With the MCU’s roadmap carefully planned years in advance, the integration of the X-Men was not immediate. Now, six years later, aside from brief appearances, it appears the X-Men’s return to the screen is not yet imminent.
Exciting Developments for the X-Men Film by Jake Schreier
It is official: Disney has the rights to feature the X-Men within its Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). However, the integration must be executed in a way that maintains the continuity of this cinematic universe. This is where complexities arise. Marvel is meticulous; everything must be planned down to the finest details, approved, classified, and kept under wraps. It’s hard to dispute the enthusiasm surrounding the potential return of the X-Men to theaters.
While the classic team of mutants is yet to appear, several characters have already made their way into the MCU. Notably, Kelsey Grammer’s Beast made a cameo in The Marvels, Channing Tatum’s Gambit and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine are set to return in Deadpool & Wolverine, and Patrick Stewart reprised his role as Professor Xavier in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Marvel is indeed working on an X-Men film. This anticipated project, shrouded in mystery, has seen Jake Schreier, director of Thunderbolts, attached as its filmmaker. Since Schreier’s involvement was announced months ago, the 43-year-old director now seems authorized to share more details.

In a recent interview with Empire, Schreier confirmed that he has begun working on the X-Men film. The project is progressing, although it remains unclear how long its development will take. “I can’t say much about it, but we have started working on X-Men, and it’s obviously very, very exciting.” he remarked, providing little else.
X-Men Film Tentatively Scheduled for 2028?
Despite this progress, the film does not yet have a release date, as Marvel has a packed schedule ahead. Upcoming releases include Spider-Man: Brand New Day, set for July 29, 2026, followed by Avengers: Doomsday on December 16, that same year, and Avengers: Secret Wars on December 15, 2027. Importantly, the X-Men, along with the Fantastic Four, are expected to appear in the first Avengers film.

Fans are therefore expecting to see the X-Men, as popularized by Fox’s films, bid farewell before a new generation of mutants is introduced in Jake Schreier’s upcoming project. However, Variety has reported that Marvel has four films slated for 2028, including sequels to The Fantastic Four, Black Panther 3, and Blade. The X-Men film could fit into this busy schedule, if the script receives approval.
