The NBA is officially expanding to Europe, with exciting developments confirmed by George Aivazoglou, manager of NBA Europe. The league’s inaugural season is set to kick off in October 2027, featuring 12 permanent teams, including clubs from Paris and Lyon, with a total of 16 teams expected to compete.

Official Launch of NBA Europe

After much speculation, the NBA Europe project is finally confirmed. George Aivazoglou announced that the league’s official start date is scheduled for October 2027. Among the 12 permanent cities involved, only Galatasaray has been definitively identified so far.

In addition to the established teams, the league will embrace a semi-open format, allowing four additional teams to compete each season. This mirrors the structure of the EuroLeague, with the winner of the Basketball Champions League receiving an invitation to participate.

Permanent Cities of NBA Europe

  • Istanbul (Galatasaray SK)
  • London
  • Manchester
  • Rome
  • Milan
  • Barcelona
  • Madrid
  • Berlin
  • Munich
  • Athens
  • Paris
  • Lyon

While it remains unclear whether existing sports clubs or football teams will field basketball divisions, the project is quickly taking shape. Aivazoglou hinted at potential matches between NBA teams and those from NBA Europe, mentioning a tournament format akin to the NBA Cup or the FIFA Club World Cup held last summer.

“There could be a tournament bringing together NBA and European teams, similar to previous events,” said Aivazoglou.

As the anticipation builds, fans are left to wonder: Are you excited about this new competition, or do you have concerns?
