In 2023, Nintendo delighted fans young and old with Super Mario Bros.: The Movie, a 3D adventure featuring the iconic plumber. Having achieved both critical and commercial success, the film produced by Illumination marks just the beginning of Nintendo’s cinematic endeavors. The company has now unveiled its next project: Super Mario Galaxy.

Nintendo Officially Announces Super Mario Galaxy Film

Celebrating the 40th anniversary of Mario Bros., Nintendo has ramped up its announcements. During a one-hour Nintendo Direct conference on September 12, 2025, the company revealed a host of projects. This seasonal event opened with a jubilant Shigeru Miyamoto, who shared more details about the upcoming Super Mario Bros. movie.

In May 2021, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa indicated interest in producing more films based on their franchises if Super Mario Bros.: The Movie proved successful. The question mark over this decision was cleared up in March 2024 when a new Mario film was announced, with Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic returning as directors. The duo successfully collaborated on the first film, making their return for the sequel a natural choice. They will be accompanied by Matthew Fogel, who is also back to pen the script after his involvement in Super Mario Bros.: The Movie.

It was during this September 2025 Nintendo Direct that the title for the new film was officially revealed: Super Mario Galaxy. This film will take audiences on an intergalactic journey, showcasing the plumber’s adventures in space. The cast will feature familiar voices, including Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, and Kevin Michael Richardson, all reprising their roles from the first film.

Upcoming Release and Future Projects

Scheduled for release on April 3, 2026, in the United States, Super Mario Galaxy promises to bring Mario back to the big screen as Nintendo continues to adapt its beloved franchises. Among other projects, an adaptation of The Legend of Zelda is already in the works, leaving fans excited for what else Nintendo has in store.
