Nintendo has officially announced the release date for Pokémon Legends: Z-A on both the Switch and the upcoming Switch 2. The company also provided details for players looking to transition between the two console generations.
Release Date Finally Revealed for Pokémon Legends: Z-A on Switch 2
Rumors had suggested that a launch for the Nintendo Switch 2 would coincide with the console’s release, much like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. However, the announcement of a title developed for the original Nintendo Switch dampened fans’ expectations, a reality confirmed by the images revealed during the Pokémon Presents event in February.
During the presentation, Nintendo unveiled a promotional video, introduced the three starters, and showcased new features of this sequel to Arceus, including a real-time combat system and the return of Mega Evolutions, details of which were highlighted in a previous report. The big question remained: when would this new adventure in the city of Illumis be available on the Switch and the next-generation Nintendo Switch 2, set to launch on June 5?
Preorders, Upgrades, and Upcoming Pokémon Presents
In a surprise announcement today, The Pokémon Company revealed that both versions of Pokémon Legends: Z-A will be released on October 16. The company stated that the Switch 2 edition will feature “enhanced graphics and improved frame rates.” Additionally, the game cover has been revealed, depicting a dark illustration of Illumis at night alongside starters Germignon and Kaiminus.
For those unable to acquire a Switch 2 upon its release, a paid upgrade option will be available both physically and digitally through the Nintendo eShop and My Nintendo Store. Fans eager to secure their copy can look forward to preorders starting on June 5, coinciding with the launch of the Switch 2.

But that’s not all. A Pokémon Presents is set for July 22, 2025, aimed at unveiling the future of the Pokémon franchise. Expectations are high for new footage of Legends Z-A, updates on the Pokémon TCG, and likely a remake. Fans are also anticipating concrete information about the 10th generation, which is expected to leverage the power of the Switch 2 to bring significant developments to the franchise. Some players have expressed disappointment that Legends Z-A will only offer an upgrade to the new console, viewing it as a prelude to a more substantial title to follow. At least, that is the hope.
