On May 14, 2025, Warner Bros. Discovery unveiled the highly anticipated second trailer for James Gunn’s upcoming Superman film. As the inaugural film in the new DC Universe, it sets the stage for a familiar team of superheroes, building excitement among fans.

Superman: A Distinct Team from the Justice League

Slated for release on July 9, 2025, the film Superman will mark the cinematic debut of the new DC Universe, arriving months after the premiere of the animated series Creature Commandos, also written by Gunn and released on Max in December 2024. Fans are eagerly awaiting this release, as Superman is not only the first film in a new expansive universe, but it’s also directed and written by Gunn, celebrated for his successful work on the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, The Suicide Squad, and the series Peacemaker.

With less than two months to go before the film’s debut, the anticipation intensified with the release of the second trailer for Superman. This trailer is particularly impactful, focusing more on action than humor, hinting at an engaging cinematic experience. True to his love for ensemble films, James Gunn has included several well-known characters from the DC Comics roster, such as Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, Metamorpho, and Mister Terrific.

Hints at the Justice League International

It’s suggested that these superheroes will play more than just cameo roles; they may pave the way for the impending arrival of another superhero team: the Justice League International. First appearing in Justice League #1, this team is distinct from both the Justice League of America and the Justice Society of America, known for their lighthearted terrestrial adventures that align perfectly with Gunn’s style.

What leads us to believe that the Justice League International will feature in Superman? In a shot from the trailer, Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, and Mister Terrific are seen in costumes featuring the logo of LordTech, a company founded by Maxwell Lord (portrayed by Sean Gunn, James Gunn’s brother), famous for sponsoring the JLI. Furthermore, in the trailer for the second season of Peacemaker, Christopher Smith (played by John Cena) is shown interacting with Guy Gardner, Maxwell Lord, and Hawkgirl, underscoring their connection.

It appears certain that Superman will lay the groundwork for the Justice League International. This film is set to distinguish itself from the darker tonalities of the DC Extended Universe, particularly evident in the Snyder Cut of the Justice League.
