Fans eagerly speculated about its eventual inclusion, and a glance at the trailer for Episode 5 reveals its long-awaited arrival next week (the episode is set to air on May 12 on Max). In this episode, Ellie encounters walls lined with mushrooms and an infected individual gradually succumbing to the virus—images reminiscent of the season’s official trailer. This decay process is crucial, as it releases toxic spores into the environment.
Why Introduce Spores Now?
Notably, in the game, this mode of transmission is present from the outset. Joel and Tess explore a building in Boston wearing masks to avoid contamination. In the HBO series, however, spores were initially replaced by a network of mycelium that connects the infected. This was a narrative and visual choice explained by Druckmann at the time.
