“I only had one shot to tell everything I knew—or everything I had discovered—about revolutions and battles, bringing in as many different incidents and colors as I could without disrupting the story,” Gilroy explained. “Let’s be honest: in the history of civilizations, rape is a significant and inevitable element. Armies and powers throughout history have committed these acts. We are all products of violence in one form or another.”
Gilroy also emphasized that his goal was to show Bix’s journey to clarity—a difficult and painful path, but one that leads her toward understanding. By including such a raw and real element of violence, Gilroy wanted to ensure the character’s development felt earned and true to the brutal world she inhabits.
Disney’s Support for the Bold Storytelling
Surprisingly, Disney allowed Gilroy to push the limits of what was considered acceptable in this type of show. Despite Star Wars‘ traditionally family-friendly image, there was no resistance from Lucasfilm regarding the sexual assault scene. Gilroy made it clear: “No one ever said anything about that. Of course, we know where the lines are drawn. We are aware of what can be shown in terms of sexuality and violence, and those boundaries have always been clear.”
