Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier is currently under intense scrutiny following a federal investigation into his alleged involvement in an illegal insider sports betting scheme. The investigation stems from a game on March 23, 2023, where Rozier reportedly advised a friend to place bets on specific outcomes related to his performance, shortly before he exited the game after less than ten minutes of play. As a result of these allegations, Rozier has been placed on administrative leave by the NBA.
FBI Investigation and Arrest
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has officially charged Rozier as part of a broader initiative dubbed “Operation Nothing But Net.” This operation has already led to the arrests of Rozier and 33 other individuals linked to similar illicit sports gambling activities. According to court documents, Rozier and his longtime associate Deniro Laster are accused of conspiring to leverage insider information about Rozier’s playing time. Investigators allege that Rozier informed Laster of his intention to leave the game early, allowing Laster to sell this information to bettors for approximately $100,000. These bets allegedly generated around $200,000 in payouts—an amount significantly less than Rozier’s typical game earnings.
While the NBA conducted its own review regarding Rozier’s actions, it ultimately determined that there was insufficient evidence to impose any penalties against him.
Rozier, who signed a substantial contract with the Heat worth nearly $96.3 million over four seasons in 2024, has been facing some performance challenges. Last season, his scoring and shooting percentages declined, and he has not played in any games this season, although he was on the bench the night before his arrest.
Financial and Legal Challenges
In addition to the insider betting allegations, Rozier is currently grappling with significant tax issues. ESPN first reported that the Internal Revenue Service filed a federal income tax lien against him for $8.2 million due to unpaid taxes, a claim recorded in Broward County to protect the government’s interests in his assets and properties. The previous year, he also dealt with a separate construction lien of $271,000 related to his Florida property, but records suggest that this lien has mostly been resolved.
Throughout his career, including the current year, Rozier has accumulated a staggering $161.7 million in salary. He also holds an executive position at GMB Chronicles, the company that owns the trademark to his nickname, “Scary Terry.”
Now, the future of Rozier—once seen as a rising NBA star—is uncertain, hinging on the outcome of the federal investigation and whether the NBA believes he can be reinstated as a trustworthy player.
