Maxime Raynaud and VJ Edgecombe have been honored as the NBA’s Rookies of the Month for March. This marks the first such recognition for both players, and notably, it is the first award this season for a French player. The Sacramento Kings’ center is making his mark, aiming for a spot on the NBA All-Rookie First Team.
Recognition of Rising Stars
In a league where talents like Cooper Flagg, Ace Bailey, and Derik Queen have dazzled this season, Raynaud stands out as a “small” rookie who continues to challenge American players. His performance in March was particularly noteworthy, solidifying his place among the best. The Kings player has achieved his first major accolade in the NBA.
Raynaud averaged 17.9 points and 8.5 rebounds during the month, justifying his selection as the Rookie of the Month in the Western Conference. VJ Edgecombe received the same honor in the Eastern Conference.
Dominance on the Court
Raynaud showcased his talent with impressive performances, scoring 32 points and grabbing 9 rebounds against the Spurs, and following up with 30 points against the Sixers the next day. He dominated the paint against teams like the Bulls and the Nets, clearly establishing himself during March. His strong finish to the season raises his hopes for a spot on the NBA All-Rookie First Team. If positions were strictly followed, there’s little doubt that Raynaud, selected 42nd overall, has proven to be the best center of his class.
The trend of French players achieving success continues, with at least one player being named Rookie of the Month each season for the last three years:
- Victor Wembanyama: January, February, and March 2024
- Alex Sarr: December 2024
- Zaccharie Risacher: February and March 2025
- Maxime Raynaud: March 2026
After Victor Wembanyama in the 2023-24 season, Zacharie Risacher and Alexandre Sarr in 2025-25, Raynaud is now the fourth French player in three years to receive the Rookie of the Month award.
