Originally featured in the 1992 thriller “Basic Instinct” as the home of Sharon Stone’s character, this sprawling property has now hit the market for a staggering $91.35 million, making it one of the most valuable listings in the United States.

The Fossett Years… And A Real-Life Mystery

Before it became a sought-after property, Seacliff was a private retreat owned by adventurer and entrepreneur Steve Fossett and his wife, Peggy. The main residence, known as “The Lodge,” was constructed in 1983 and was later showcased in “Basic Instinct.” Fossett, celebrated for his extraordinary explorations, set over 100 records in aviation, sailing, and endurance sports. He notably became the first individual to fly solo nonstop around the world in a balloon and achieved a solo, nonstop circumnavigation of the globe in a fixed-wing aircraft.

The Carmel estate mirrored Fossett’s adventurous spirit, filled with maps, artifacts, and curiosities from his global pursuits. A unique feature of the home is a two-story Art Deco library, complete with a gold-leaf domed ceiling illustrating Johannes Kepler’s planetary laws.

The narrative took a dramatic turn in 2007 when Fossett mysteriously vanished during a short flight from a Nevada ranch. An extensive search eventually revealed wreckage and human remains in the Sierra Nevada over a year later. Following his disappearance, Peggy Fossett maintained ownership of the property until her passing in 2017, after which the estate was placed on the market.

In 2018, the estate was acquired for $14.4 million by Gary Vickers, a software entrepreneur with a broader vision. Vickers had made his fortune in the oil-and-gas software industry, founding Petroleum Place, an online energy asset marketplace that later evolved into P2 Energy Solutions. His company grew to be integral to the industry, and in 2013, it was sold to private equity firm Advent International in a deal valued between $500 million and $700 million.

Coming from a family deeply rooted in the oil industry, Vickers used his significant resources to embark on a long-term project of acquiring neighboring parcels along Spindrift Road. His goal was to create an expansive estate, and the former Fossett property was the final piece of his acquisition puzzle.

After the purchase, Vickers invested tens of millions in renovations and additional construction, transforming Seacliff into a fully integrated compound.

How Five Lots Became A $91 Million Compound

The current listing reflects years of strategic development. The estate now encompasses approximately 5.35 acres and features six structures: The Lodge, four guest cottages, and a newer residence. Together, these structures offer over 18,000 square feet of living space and nearly 1,000 feet of private oceanfront.

The main house itself spans over 12,000 square feet, boasting eight bedrooms and multiple kitchens, all designed with dramatic aesthetic elements that echo the natural landscape. Noteworthy features include massive stone installations, 150,000 pounds of moss-covered boulders, floating flagstone steps, and oversized fireplaces, contributing to the home’s rugged yet sophisticated appeal.
