New Developments in Liam Payne’s Estate Following His Untimely Death

Seven months after the unexpected death of pop star Liam Payne, court filings have uncovered details regarding his estate. The former One Direction member passed away without a will, leaving behind an estimated fortune of $40 million, which is now under the management of his ex-partner Cheryl and a music industry attorney.

Details of the Estate and Inheritance

Payne, who tragically died in October 2024 at the age of 31 after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, left an estate comprising property, music royalties, and personal assets totaling £28.6 million (approximately $38 million) gross, as per official probate documents filed in the United Kingdom. After accounting for debts and expenses, the net value stands at £24.3 million, roughly $32.2 million.

Due to the absence of a legal will at the time of his death, Payne’s estate is being administered under the intestacy laws of England and Wales. Under these regulations, the estate of an unmarried individual typically transfers to their children if there is no surviving spouse or civil partner.

Consequently, Payne’s eight-year-old son Bear, whom he shares with Cheryl (formerly known as Cheryl Cole), is expected to inherit the entire estate. Currently, Cheryl and veteran music lawyer Richard Mark Bray have been appointed as co-administrators. They have a limited grant of representation, enabling them to manage Payne’s assets, but they are barred from distributing any funds or finalizing the estate until a general grant is sanctioned by the court.

Cheryl’s Emotional Response and Payne’s Last Days

Following Payne’s death, Cheryl expressed her grief in a heartfelt public statement, describing the loss as “earth-shattering.” She urged the media and fans to treat the tragedy with sensitivity, especially for the sake of their son. “Liam was not only a pop star and celebrity; he was a son, a brother, an uncle, a dear friend, and a father to our son,” she wrote. “A son who now has to face the reality of never seeing his father again.”

Payne’s sudden demise sent shockwaves through his fanbase globally. He rose to fame as part of One Direction, a boy band that gained international acclaim after forming on “The X Factor” in 2010, selling over 20 million albums worldwide. Subsequently, he embarked on a successful solo career, releasing his debut album, “LP1,” in 2019, which featured the hit single “Strip That Down.”

At the time of his death, Payne was in a relationship with influencer Kate Cassidy, who revealed she had departed Argentina just days before the tragic incident. In subsequent interviews, Cassidy shared that Payne had been in a “great place” and filled with love at their last meeting. A postmortem concluded that his death was due to multiple traumatic injuries and internal bleeding, with a toxicology report indicating the presence of drugs, which sparked a criminal investigation in Argentina. Earlier this year, charges of criminal negligence were dropped against three out of five individuals involved.

As Cheryl and Bray oversee the administration of Payne’s substantial estate, attention will likely turn toward preserving his legacy and ensuring Bear’s financial security. However, the emotional scars from this untimely loss remain profound.
