As sports leagues engage in partnerships with betting organizations, they face significant challenges, including potential scandals that can involve players in illegal activities. Recent cases in Major League Baseball (MLB) and the NCAA reveal how seriously such issues can escalate, leading to arrests and severe repercussions for those implicated.
Recent Scandals in Major League Baseball
Major League Baseball has recently been rocked by allegations against players Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz Jr., who are facing up to 65 years in prison for allegedly throwing balls intentionally to influence betting outcomes. Additionally, NBA figures such as head coach Chauncey Billups and Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier have been entangled in illegal gambling activities, with both being arrested as part of a larger crackdown involving over 30 individuals.
College Sports Under Scrutiny
In the realm of college athletics, players are not exempt from such scandals. The NCAA’s introduction of name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals in 2021 was intended to allow college athletes to earn money, but critics argue that it has altered the integrity of college sports. Recent findings from the NCAA Committee on Infractions highlight alarming instances of player misconduct linked to betting.
The committee identified improper actions by several college basketball players, including Chatton “BJ” Freeman from Arizona State and players from Mississippi Valley State and New Orleans. These individuals were found to have engaged in activities that manipulated game outcomes during the 2024-25 season, resulting in the loss of their college eligibility.

The findings revealed that players had either underperformed deliberately or manipulated prop bets by providing insider information to bettors. In one reported incident, Freeman shared performance-related details with a banned former player, who then placed bets on Freeman’s statistics in daily fantasy sports.
Players from the University of New Orleans were also implicated after being overheard discussing bets that affected their game against McNeese State, which they lost 86-61. One player noted that another had instructed him to avoid scoring further points, raising significant concerns about game integrity. Similarly, Mississippi Valley State players became embroiled in a scandal linked to Rozier’s involvement in an NBA betting ring, with one player caught discussing the possibility of “throwing a game.”
These incidents underscore the complex and troubling link between sports and betting. As the gambling element continues to grow in sports, the temptation for players—especially those in college who may not have financial stability—becomes a significant risk. The consequences, however, can be dire, often leading to the end of careers and tarnished reputations.
