Set to premiere on September 9, 2026, the upcoming film “Clayface” will focus on the iconic antagonist of Batman. Directed by James Watkins, this new DC movie has just cast its lead actor.
Who is Clayface?
Clayface, known as Gueule d’Argile in French, is a recurring antagonist in the Batman universe. Created in 1940 by Bob Kane, Clayface is a villain made of clay and mud. Over the years, multiple characters have assumed the identity of Clayface, with the first being Basil Karlo. Once a struggling actress, he gains his powers after exposure to a chemical substance called Renuyu.
Once empowered, Clayface seeks revenge against the Hollywood elite, committing murders of his former colleagues. He quickly descends into a life of crime, establishing himself as a recurring adversary of Batman.
The Actor Playing Clayface
James Watkins, known for his work on The Woman in Black (2012), Bastille Day (2016), an episode of Black Mirror, and the recent Speak No Evil (2024), has been appointed to direct the DC film centered on Clayface. Renowned writer Mike Flanagan has been brought on board to develop the script.
Clayface will firmly belong to the DC Universe (DCU) envisioned by James Gunn and Peter Safran. The film will connect to various other DC productions, including Superman and Supergirl.
Recently, Deadline revealed that the actor who will portray Clayface in the DC film is Tom Rhys Harries, a 32-year-old British actor known for his role in the series Suspicion. He also had a recurring role in the series Britannia. Harries has appeared in Blood of the Templars 2: The River of Blood (2014), Dragonheart: Vengeance (2020), and the recent Kandahar (2023).
