Six fan theories about Dragon Ball that just might hold some truth.

Six fan theories about Dragon Ball that just might hold some truth.

Fan theories breathe new life into stories, and Dragon Ball is no exception. Despite the intricate universe crafted by Akira Toriyama, some fan theories are surprisingly plausible. This article explores six such intriguing concepts.

#1 Oozaru Form Weakens Saiyans

Vegeta as Oozaru

Saiyans have the unique ability to transform into Oozaru, a giant monkey form that amplifies their power tenfold. This transformation seems formidable, but paradoxically, it greatly weakens Saiyans. Over the course of Dragon Ball, it becomes evident that they possess another means of power enhancement: the Super Saiyan transformation. This state is accessible to all Saiyans through intense training and strong emotions. However, clinging to their primal nature and traditional warrior culture has hindered their evolution. This is why Vegeta, despite his pride, did not protest when he learned that his tail would not regrow: Goku demonstrated during their battle that it was no longer necessary for strength. A striking example can be seen with the Saiyans from Universe 6, who are significantly more powerful than their Universe 7 counterparts during Bardock’s time, even though they lack tails.

#2 Hybrid Saiyans Outperform Purebloods

Gohan Beast

While Goku and Vegeta are indeed powerful, their offspring boast even greater potential. Gohan exemplifies this, with Piccolo stating on multiple occasions that he could become the universe’s strongest warrior if he chose to. Gohan has repeatedly shown this potential, notably being the strongest character by the end of Dragon Ball Z without fusion. In Dragon Ball Super, his Beast transformation defies logic. Where does this miraculous strength come from? It stems from his human side. Both Gohan’s Beast form and Trunks’ Super Saiyan Rage are unique transformations that provide a remarkable power boost, suggesting that this newfound strength arises from their human heritage rather than their Saiyan bloodline.

#3 Did Goku and Frieza’s Fight Really Last 5 Minutes?

Freezer

We’ve all teased Frieza about his infamous “5 minutes,” but what if he was right? Two factors might explain this. First, the time perceived by Frieza may differ from our own. Thus, his “5 minutes” might not equate to 300 seconds in our perception but rather to a temporal reference specific to him. Second, consider how we perceive the fight: the clash between Goku and Frieza is shown at a significantly slowed pace. Similar to Saint Seiya, which depicts light-speed punches in an understandable timeframe, Dragon Ball presents Goku and Frieza moving so rapidly that their fight indeed lasted for 5 minutes.

#4 Ki Acts as a Shield

Goku and Krillin

Ki is the energy force harnessed in Dragon Ball. Mastering it allows for Kikoha production, various techniques, and defense mechanisms. This last aspect is particularly interesting, as it plays a crucial role in fighters’ physical endurance. Despite their robust physiques, there have been instances where some warriors were injured by seemingly harmless or unexpected attacks. An example is Krillin’s pebble striking Goku’s head, or Sorbet’s ray, which nearly killed him. This suggests that for effective defense, Ki must be consciously ‘activated’ or maintained. In essence, as long as the user stays alert and concentrated, their body remains protected.

#5 Frieza and Cold Are the Last of Their Kind

Cold and Frieza

In Universe 7, only two members of Frieza’s race are known: Cold and his son. The rarity of their kind likely stems from the fact that they are the last surviving representatives of their species. In a 2014 interview, Akira Toriyama noted that these two were the only members of their race with abnormal power levels. Their weaker peers have probably either died out or been eliminated by Cold and Frieza themselves. Ideally, we hope this theory isn’t true, as many fans would love to see Cooler return.

#6 The Secret Behind the Time Machine

Omori

To enable Trunks to travel back in time, the future Bulma successfully created a time machine. However, this invention didn’t emerge from nowhere. In Jaco the Galactic Patrolman, we learn about Dr. Omori, a scientist who was working on a time travel project. Given the familial ties between the Brief family and him, it is highly likely that Bulma used his notes to design the Time Machine.
