A month ago, The Pokémon Company, Game Freak, and Nintendo unveiled the highly anticipated design of Mega Dragonite in a new trailer for Pokémon Legends: Z-A. The reactions have been mixed, with some fans expressing admiration, while others are left disappointed. Given Dragonite’s popularity within the community, it was expected that its new design would spark varied opinions. This is where talented artists from across the internet have stepped in, eager to showcase their interpretations.
New Design for Mega Dragonite
Months prior to its official announcement, leaks regarding the design of Mega Dragonite, along with all Mega Evolutions from Pokémon Legends: Z-A, began circulating online. While no official images were released to the public, detailed descriptions of the Mega Evolutions were accessible. Curious fans were able to envision the designs based on these descriptions, while the more artistically inclined set out to bring them to life.
With last month’s trailer reveal, Nintendo, The Pokémon Company, and Game Freak have officially introduced Mega Dragonite. The new design features a spherical element at the tail reminiscent of Draco and large wings atop its head. However, this design has not been universally accepted by players. One artist, Maru, shared his interpretation after expressing disappointment with the official design: “Last week, Game Freak unveiled the new design for Mega Dragonite, and I was disheartened. I truly didn’t like the design, just like many of you, so I quickly decided to work on it to do justice to Dragonite, one of my favorite Pokémon. I aimed to keep the spirit and original concept. Let me know what you think of my version, and if you have suggestions for future Megas I could redesign.” His Reddit post garnered over 9,200 likes.

Community Response
While the design presented by Game Freak has faced criticism, Maru’s version has resonated strongly with fans. This reimagined design pays homage to Lance, known as Peter in the French version of the games, who is a prominent member of the Elite Four in Indigo League, specializing in Dragon-type Pokémon. He can field teams with up to three Dragonites. The community is eager to hear your thoughts on this reinterpretation. Are you impressed or disappointed? Feel free to participate in the poll below.
