The Las Vegas Raiders are set to make the first overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft while navigating a major coaching transition. Following a disappointing 3-14 season, the team has parted ways with head coach Pete Carroll, who was dismissed after just one year in charge.
Coaching Changes Amidst a Disappointing Season
Carroll’s tenure with the Raiders began optimistically with a victory over the New England Patriots, one of the top teams in the AFC. However, the team struggled to maintain momentum, suffering through a shocking 14-game losing streak. The season concluded with a narrow win against the Kansas City Chiefs, secured by a dramatic 60-yard field goal from Daniel Carlson in the final moments.
Financial Fallout from Firing Five Coaches
Despite being under contract for two more years, Carroll’s dismissal means the Raiders will need to pay him a buyout of $16 million. Remarkably, this decision adds to the team’s financial burden, as they are now responsible for compensating five former coaches a staggering total of approximately $50 million for the upcoming season.
Among those on the payroll is Jon Gruden, who is still owed $10 million annually after resigning in 2021 due to a controversy involving offensive emails. Gruden had previously signed one of the most lucrative contracts in NFL history, worth $100 million over ten years.
Former head coach Josh McDaniels, who recorded a 6-11 record in his first season, is also set to receive $10 million per year until his contract expires. He was let go on Halloween 2023 after a less-than-ideal start to his second season.
Antonio Pierce, who briefly served as interim coach after McDaniels’ exit, made headlines with a strong start but ended the season with a dismal 4-13 record. He will pocket $8 million despite his brief tenure.
Chip Kelly is yet another name on the list, having received $6 million after being dismissed just 11 games into the season, part of a three-year deal that guarantees him payments through 2027.
As the Raiders look for their next head coach, owner Mark Davis continues to demonstrate a willingness to invest significant sums, prompting questions about the future direction of the team.
