Disney calls off highly anticipated live-action remake

Since the release of Maleficent in 2014, Disney has ramped up its production of live-action films, bringing a total of 20 movies to theaters or Disney+ over the past eleven years. While these adaptations have proven financially successful, critical reception has varied widely. Recently, however, the entertainment giant announced the cancellation of a highly anticipated live-action remake.

Cancellation of The Aristocats Remake

Another live-action remake project from Disney has been put on hold. For over a decade, the company has been reimagining its beloved animated classics for the big screen. While titles like Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, and more recently Lilo & Stitch have performed admirably at the box office, some attempts have left audiences disappointed. The failure of Snow White, which released earlier this year, has prompted the studio to reassess its strategy. Following the suspension of the Tangled project, the cancellation of The Aristocats remake marks yet another setback.

The remake of The Aristocats, the beloved animated film from 1970 featuring a family of Parisian cats trying to escape a greedy butler, was announced in 2023. The film was to be directed by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, renowned drummer of The Roots and Academy Award winner for his documentary Summer of Soul. However, in a recent interview with Score: The Podcast, Questlove confirmed that the project will no longer move forward.

“A new administration came in, I presented my ideas, my musical examples, and all the bells and whistles… Then there was another reshuffle. And a third one. At that point, I thought: maybe this isn’t for me,” Questlove said, humorously adding that he has “enough to work on until 2029, 2030.”

Should this cancellation be regretted? Not necessarily. Adapting a band of musical cats into live-action is no easy feat. The 2019 remake of The Lion King illustrated this; despite impressive special effects, many criticized the photorealistic animals for lacking emotional depth.

Disney’s New Strategic Direction

The cancellation of The Aristocats is part of a larger trend within Disney. While live-action remakes have become a staple of the company’s recent offerings, the dismal performance of Snow White, which earned only 145 million dollars against a budget of 270 million, has led the studio to slow its production pace. Other projects, including Tangled, Hercules, Bambi, and Robin Hood, are either postponed or canceled. Nonetheless, Disney is not done yet; Lilo & Stitch, released this year, grossed over a billion dollars worldwide, making it the second highest-grossing film of 2025.

The Aristocats

Next year, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will reprise his role as Maui in the live-action remake of Moana, which is touted as a future box-office giant. In the meantime, fans of The Aristocats can still enjoy the timeless 1970 original, which remains as charming as ever.
